‘And All Because The Lady Loves Milk Tray’ Part of Maria Rivans’s Still Life Series, ‘And all Because the Lady Loves Milk Tray’ takes its title from the iconic Cadbury’s Milk Tray adverts of the 1970s. In this opulent collage, life is more than a box of chocolates: it’s an overflowing bouquet of wild flowers, brimming with birds, butterflies, and bees. But all is not quite as it seems: up in the top corner, a black and white pylon is being scaled by an intrepid climber. Is this the ladder of progress, leading us away from the colour and vibrancy of nature? Or is it simply the man from Milk Tray, out on an urgent mission to deliver more chocolates? Subverting the kitsch advertising slogan, Rivans’s collage is more than eye candy: it’s a meditation on the harmony of nature and human creation, reminding us that the things we make can coexist with the natural world – but only if we remember that life is the sweetest gift we’re given.
