ALEXANDER KORZER-ROBINSON

Alexander Korzer-Robinson is a UK-based artist whose work transforming antiquarian books has brought him international acclaim. Working mainly in collage and related techniques, the practice's focus are sculptural artworks made from antiquarian books.

The base material for his "cut book sculptures" are old books that have been stripped of their utilitarian value by the passage of time. Working through a book, page by page, a new composition is formed using only the contents of the original volume.

He cuts around the images and leaves them in the book, in exactly the same place they appear - nothing is moved or added. The books are then sealed and a perspex cover is inserted to protect them from dust. They have a fixing attached so are ready to hang - or stand on a shelf if required. Each book is individually signed on the back cover.

Alexander Korzer-Robinson: 'The use of antiquarian books makes the work at the same time an exploration and a deconstruction of nostalgia. We create our own past from fragments of reality in a process that combines the wilful aspects of remembering and forgetting with the coincidental and unconscious.'
