Inspired by Rick Rubin, author of my recent favourite book on creativity, The Creative Act: A Way of Being, I approached this piece as a diary entry—without a plan or preconceived idea.

This work was created during a summer following an incredibly busy and exhausting period. I found myself struggling to take a break, ironically reading Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman, where he discusses "idleness aversion." This psychological principle describes our tendency to be happier when busy, even if the busyness is imposed. It's an inability to rest or a nagging anxiety that one should always be productive.

Books often find a way into my paintings, and this piece is no exception. A literal copy of Philip Guston: I Paint What I Want to See—my favourite book this summer—appears in the work. Guston's influence extends beyond his thoughts; his famous pink, a blend of cadmium red medium and titanium white, subtly sneaks into the palette as well.
