Meet 'Barbra', Maria Rivans’s fiercest pin-up yet, starring the supersonic Barbra Streisand! Commissioned by TV star Catherine Tyldesley, this colourful collage tells a tale of strength, glamour and female inspiration. Gazing boldly at the viewer, Barbra’s striking feline features are echoed in the lions, leopards, and tigers that prowl through the blossoming flowers. Fearless female figures nestle in the headdress too, from Jane Russell admiring the view to the commanding woman who stands at the top of a column. But in among the hard, shining diamonds, slinking cats, and strong women, Rivans adds motifs of vulnerability: the classical nude and the paparazzo’s flashbulb remind us of the pressures of fame and stardom. For all the glitz and glamour, the message is clear: beauty may be in the eye of camera, but true strength comes from within.
