The canvas is covered in vintage quilt, denim, canvas, and a star section from a vintage American flag.
The painting process using washes of watered down white gesso, and watered down inks. The painting was built up with layers of very thin broad strokes of these watery mediums. So I titled the piece ‘Water Painting’.
Water Painting is also a reference to Gary Hume’s ‘Water painting’, a painted series of silhouetted figures made up of multiple lines. Gary Hume, the YBA’s and the at the Sensation Exhibition at the RCA were hugely influential to me and I still find myself referencing the YBA’s.
The model Nimue Smit is Dutch, I often use models who are not massively well known, but have a kind of magic or ethereal quality about them. Nimue has that other worldly appearance, I often like to make figures look like they are ‘emerging from the cloth’, which this painting does with the fluidity of line and washes of ink.
